WASHINGTON — The U.S. on Tuesday struck multiple Iranian tankers in response to more attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Iranian state television also reported U.S. forces attacked Iranian oil tankers near the southern port of Jask and near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. The latest tit-for-tat strikes follow a U.S. military strike on three Iranian oil tankers after Navy warships were targeted with ballistic missiles, warning that it would destroy Iran’s oil fleet if necessary.
Iran later announced a new exclusion zone near the Strait of Hormuz. The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Iran’s aviation industry, targeting airlines and cargo service providers to isolate Tehran. Rising oil prices and economic strain are complicating Trump’s efforts to end the six-month war with Tehran, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy warning tanker crews in Kuwait and Bahrain to leave their vessels.
Tehran accuses Kuwait and Bahrain of aiding U.S. attacks. The U.S. has helped some ships transit through the Strait of Hormuz off Oman, while Iran seeks to control its own shipping route.
